“Oh, Kitty! how nice it would be if we could only get through into Looking- glass House! I’m sure it’s got, oh! such beautiful things in it! Let’s pretend there’s a way of getting through into it, somehow, Kitty.”
- Alice, Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll
March 15, 2014. The day it all began. The day the life of those living in Kanehira City changed. A normal day turned disaster in a matter of seconds. The tragedy known as, The Great Earthquake, destroyed only part of the residential area and a majority of the business district. However, the quake itself was not as bad as the one most of the citizens are used to having. Yet there was more property damage. Miraculously no one one was dead, well recorded as dead.
Many people were deemed missing after the incident. And even a year after the fact they have yet to be found. Authorities are trying their damnedest to find the people, but even they can only do so much. With the sheer amount of people missing you would just assume them to be dead. Many families have given up hope in finding their loved ones, It is easier to accept the fact that they are dead than to wonder if they are lost and injured.
Rumors began to spread that the earthquake was caused by some government experiment gone wrong. Some also began to suspect that they saw Monstrous Beings during the disaster. But the general population throws these claims away.
Months after The Great Earthquake life started to return to normal. The external and internal wounds of the incident started to heal, with the large number of missing people as an everlasting scar. The nightmare was finally over, or so they thought.
Around the summer of 2015, more missing persons cases started to appear. People were seemingly vanishing from existence. No signs, no traces, nothing. It was a repeat of that day in March.
With the increase in missing persons cases, it is becoming increasingly unsafe for anyone to be out at night. All over the internet people are talking about rifts to parallel worlds are the real reason people have gone missing. The government ensures the citizens that the disappearances are kidnappings and products of human trafficking and will be dealt with as swiftly as possible. And, that they should not believe in some science fiction rumor such as rifts to parallel worlds. But who would find that comforting or even believable? No group, not even one as big as the Yakuza, could conduct this number of kidnappings and with no witnesses or evidence. Regardless the majority of the population trusts in their government to get the job done.
But what about you? Will you decide to go close your eyes and blindly listen to the words of the government, and see how far down the rabbit hole they go? Or, will you decide to widen you sharpen your glance, examine your reflection, and travel through the looking glass?
The choice is yours.
