Appearance
Shion's appearance isn't too much of a departure from that of any other Japanese girl in her age group, despite her job as a model. She stands at 5'3 and weighs in at around 104 lbs. She has waist-length wavy black hair, which she puts up in twin tails with ribbons. Her fringe is cut just barely above her blue eyes, which were inherited from her mother's side of the family. Her neutral countenance is rather solemn, if not slightly intimidating.
She wears her school uniform without much embellishment, but prefers go home and change her outfit first if she has appointments after school. Her wardrobe predominantly consists of western-style clothes, mostly pieces from Trandy, the clothing brand she models for. Shion's casual clothes are usually some sort of shirt or blouse and a skirt or a dress. Pants and shorts are somewhat rare on her, but she does wear either one if the occasion requires it.
Personality
Likes: Books, home-cooked meals, ghost stories, cold weather, older men
Dislikes: Spicy food, carrots, wasting resources, being manipulated, recurrent mistakes
Hobbies: Reading books, baking, knitting
Goals: To take good care of her grandmother and do extremely well in school.
Shion often seems like she always has something on her mind, giving off the impression that she's either busy or just plain cold and making people hesitant to approach, but it's just that there's a lot of thinking going on inside her pretty little head. While she keeps the majority of her personal affairs to herself, after spending some non-work time with her, one will find that she is a relatively pleasant and kind young lady, if a little bit blunt and even sarcastic when among friends and in private. She does try to help out those who ask for her assistance, and tries to look after and treasure those who become her friends. She tends to be affectionate to her friends, usually in the form of small gifts. Although she's hardly the type to ask a person to change to suit her desires, if she sees her friend do something she doesn't like, she'll let them know.
A diligent worker, Shion enjoys the feeling of having accomplished a lot, even if people call her a people pleaser. She's the practical sort though, and tends not to hold any illusions about great success or renown, but expects her hard work to be met halfway by others. There's a mild competitive streak in her, and it is most apparent when it comes to grades. Once all that work is done, Shion enjoys leisure time as much as anyone else and likes having time for her hobbies and other mundane activities.
Shion also believes that she has a lot of control over what she does with her life, and gets frustrated when unsuccessful at her endeavors or when forced to sit back and let someone else handle it. Although she's quite tolerant to petty offenses, as with any other individual, Shion has limits that should not be crossed. Once she has been sufficiently offended, forgiveness would be difficult to obtain and while she won't take vengeful actions other than in words, she is not likely to forget it for years.
Finally, given that she hasn't really been living in Kanehira that long, Shion fears that she wouldn't be able to truly feel like she truly belongs there. Disappearing people aside, Kanehira seems like a great place to plant her roots in, and Shion hopes to live there with her granny for a long time.
History
Shion was the firstborn daughter of Takehiko and Jillian Amanomiya. For a young couple who had difficulties having a child, that she was even born was a blessing, and they treated her as such. For the first few years of her life Shion was a bright and happy child, and her parents saw that she was provided every need and want -- and even then a little bit more.
However, it was not meant to last. Takehiko and Jillian have long hoped for a large and happy family, and for that to happen, they would need to have more children. Around the time Shion turned three, a visit to the doctor made it became quite apparent that the couple's dream was truly out of reach. Even though their daughter was a source of happiness for them, it could not fill the emptiness left by their disappointed hopes. As the years passed, the void grew larger and larger until it began to affect the couple's behavior towards each other. Although it wasn't either parent's fault, they blamed the other out of frustration. They fought often. Outwardly they maintained the guise of a happy family, but the smallest things one did ticked the other off, and an argument would erupt as soon as they got to somewhere private.
At first, they tried to keep it secret from Shion, but she soon became involved, with both parents demanding her to pick which parent she'd go with if/when they split, practically every time they fought. Shion withdrew into the safe world of studying, focusing on her grades and avoiding her parents. It was a good thing too, since she never had to see her father strike Jillian, nor did she ever hear Jillian threaten to leave with another man.
Shion was nine years old when she and her parents involved in a traffic accident that ended up with the family car falling off a bridge and into a river. A bystander dived in and was able to pull Shion from the backseat, but as for her parents who were sitting up front... It was too late. They perished that fateful day, leaving Shion to the care of her paternal grandparents and necessitating a move to Kanehira City.
Although Shion never regained her former energy for horsing around, it seemed that she had recovered well, after a few weeks of locking herself in her room and generally being uncooperative to her grandparents. Life somehow returned to being peaceful for Shion. Her grandparents raised her with a mixture of indulgence and discipline. It was then that Shion learned how to do chores around the house and get a start on managing a household. Academic excellence was still expected from her, and so she performed up to par.
But children can be so cruel. As a newcomer with no friends and one who lacked parents at that, Shion became a victim of bullying. Scrapes, bruises, small cuts, broken things -- all those she can hide from her grandparents or make excuses that she had fallen down and so on, but there had been no other way to explain why she came home one afternoon in tears and with a large chunk of her previously-long hair missing. It took a lot of assurance from her grandparents before Shion finally spilled the beans about how she has been treated at school.
It was hard not to feel like she was being punished when Hokuto decided to ship her off to St. Bridget Academy for Young Ladies, a private boarding school. So that Shion can get a new start, he said. Sayuri didn't exactly protest or try to stop him, but she had misgivings about having her only granddaughter away from her side.
St. Bridget's administration was strict and the students were almost always supervised, having gained a reputation of being a place to keep troubled young girls and hide away daughters. At St. Bridget, no one terrorized Shion or brought up the horrible memories. Her focus of maintaining good grades was still there, but as her grandmother had feared (although not to the extent she expected), Shion also learned a few skills, thanks to some friends she made there and some students from the neighboring male-exclusive St. Andrews. Contact between schools is minimal apart from a few school events and the rare weekend off, but as Shion late found, there were ways around that.
At first it was just sneaking around, lock picking, and underage drinking and smoking. It eventually escalated to sneaking out on weekends for drag racing parties. That was all at night though; Shion didn't dare do those things often nor in broad daylight, and was very careful not to get caught. Thankfully, it didn't seem like her teachers and grandparents found out, so she quit that scene while she was ahead, after one very close call. It wasn't as if Shion was anything other than a good girl during the brief periods she was home for vacation, so it hadn't been too much of an effort to slide back into normalcy. Life at the boarding school became quiet and nurturing, both much needed, if not a little lonely due to the absence of family.
Near the end of her first year in high school, Sayuri sent for Shion, saying that Hokuto had passed away from a stroke. Shion returned to Kanehira immediately after the last of her exams to attend the funeral services for her grandfather, and stayed there to keep her lonely grandmother company, transferring to Kanehira High the following year.
At first she was nervous about the whole thing, considering what had caused her to be sent to private school, but it was a decision made for her granny's sake... After her first week seemed to go well without a hitch, Shion was able to relax and carry on for the rest of the year normally. A lot of time had passed by, after all, and Shion didn't even remember a whole lot from back when she was still living in Kanehira full-time. It made her relieved to finally feel like she had an actual home and was living in it too, and adored her sweet, fluffy grandmother. She even gained a side job -- modeling for Trandy, a popular clothing line that caters to teens and young adults -- as a favor for her grandmother's friend.
Now that she is on her final year of high school, there is more pressure than ever to do well and get into a good school. Not only that, but preparing for adulthood seems to be a rather complicated process when people in the city you live in start disappearing mysteriously and rumors of all sorts are abound.
