Appearance
Hiromi doesn't really distinguish herself from many other girls in her class. She has shoulder-length black hair and brown eyes. Stands at about 5'2", and while she's slim she is not athletically fit. When out of class she prefers long sleeved shirts, sweaters and pants. She doesn't put forth a lot of effort on her appearance, mainly just happy that her hair isn't standing in completely different directions.

Likes: Solving problems, making plans about traveling.
Dislikes: Arguments between people she likes, things seen as 'childish activities' (i.e. manga, video games), showing 'emotion on your sleeve'

Hiromi is very comfortable spending her time alone nor does she feel the need to fill silence with pointless chatter. She doesn't seem passionate or even interested about topics that are typical for a first year student at Kanehira High.
This can make it hard for newcomers to approach her. However she is very dutiful and doesn't shirk away from responsibility. When challenged or pushed she can appear really sarcastic, but wont visibly show much emotion beyond that. She's pessimistic and cynical, but usually doesn't voice these thoughts out loud.
History
The Sakata family has never been the happiest. Hiromi thought it was because they used up all their luck early. After all she could always remembering looking up to her big sister, practically idolizing her. Or smile and shake her head when her older brother would fumble with a problem that had a surprisingly simple solution. How her dad would constantly say how proud he was of his three children. Sure her mom was there too, just not very hands on. And that was fine too. It wasn't perfect she had thought at the time, but simply nice.
How she ached for those times again.
That life she took for granted was met with one tragedy after the other. Her sister was killed in traffic accident. Her brother became withdrawn, shutting her out of his life completely. And her parents couldn't even stand to be in the same room together anymore.
Because her parents seemed incapable of stepping up and solving the crisis the family was having, Hiromi went through a shift in personality. Believing that she had to 'toughen up' and 'grow up' quickly if she wanted to keep her family together, she adopted what she believed to be a 'stronger' personality.
And it worked. Sort of. Her mother and father were still off doing their own thing, but she felt like she was finally getting her older brother back. Sure it was suspicious that he was leaving late at night, but she had attributed that as just something teenage boys did. When the disappearances happening in Kanehira became abundantly more frequent, and Toshrio continued to sneak out late in the middle of the night returning with bruises and cuts, she suspected he was butting into matters that best concerned the police. Although worried, she could not openly approach him on the matter, fearing it would lead to an argument and undo all the work she had done to keep them together.
The Sakata's truly had no luck. All of her attempts to keep them together were for naught. When the earthquake hit, Toshiro went missing. Her hope that he would come home faded little by little every day. Eventually she just believed him to be another victim of Kanehira. This small city that seemed to do more harm than good...
